After several days of declining death rates nationwide, the United States saw its highest number of COVID-19 related deaths yesterday, when over 2,400 Americans died within a 24-hour period. 

Despite this perceived setback in efforts by medical and infectious disease professionals to control the spread of novel coronavirus, health officials indicate they have seen a general flattening out of infections and mortalities, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention continues to institute greater testing and expand health-care capacity amid the nation’s fifth week of social distancing measures.

These daily changing variances in the rate of infection and coronavirus-related deaths further complicate the decision-making process of governors, who worry reopening their states’ economies too soon may lead to a dramatic spike in new cases.
