Would it be better for me to get a credit card now as a first year or wait until I’m a third or fourth year to get one?

My take is that it is never too early, unless you don’t think you would have the discipline to use the credit card wisely but would have more discipline later. The sooner you get one and use it wisely (only use it for spending within your budget, pay it off in full and on time every month), the sooner you build your (good) credit history, which makes like after college easier. You may not easily get a credit card as a first year, even a “student” card. A secured credit card may be the way to go if that is the case. You will need to keep a certain amount of money in a savings account attached to the card until you prove you can manage it.
