The decision to go beyond one credit card is an individual decision. Given that credit cards come with different perks, you might value having cards with different features. For example, you might use a "cash back" type card for most purchases, but you might also have an airline card to accumulate airline miles and get free checked bags. Another possible reason to have a second card would be to have one with a different closing date. If you are paid twice a month, this might allow you to split your purchases up and cover one bill with each paycheck. A final and simple reason to have a second card would be to have a spare in case your primary card is compromised.
