Why are credit cards so much safer to use at gas station pumps?

I’m not sure about this, but I’m familiar with the way in which gas pumps might steal your information. This happened to a family friend but after swiping their card once, an error was shown and they were asked to swipe again. Lo-and behold, a week later their credit card company called and told them that someone else might have used their card without authorization. In other words, just be careful when getting gas somewhere you’re not familiar with, and if it ever asks for you to swipe again when you don’t think you’ve done anything wrong – don’t do it.
