Several professors have expressed to me that it “isn’t worth it” to attend graduate school or a PhD program if you have to pay for it. In other words, if no school is willing to pay your way, then you’re better off picking another career path than taking on that kind of debt. Does anyone (especially people who have gone through graduate/PhD programs or are planning to) have any thoughts on this?

I have found that it’s best to try the field and see what you can “get away with” without extra schooling and then make a decision based on the experience as to whether you feel like you need the extra schooling or not
