Is it really true that women earn 80 cents for every dollar a man earns, or is it a result of women choosing lower paying professions?

First, it is true, for full time workers in the US women earn about 80% of what men do. Some of this is attributable to being in lower paying positions and also some is attributable to gaps in employment. Women are far more likely to take a period of time off from work, generally to raise children. These gaps have been shown to have a significant impact on long-term earnings. Unfortunately, a portion of the wage gap is due to gender discrimination. Some companies may pay women less than their male counterparts. The pay gap in total has stayed the same for the last 15 years, in spite of significant gains in the 20 years prior to that. One piece of good news is that the gap is significantly lower for younger workers. Under age 30, women employed full-time earn about 93% of what men earn. It is a great question to ask. The more people talk about it and get informed about the issue the more pressure that can be applied for positive change.
