If you aren’t an expert in your taxes, it is worth the fee to hire an accountant to handle your taxes? Or are those tax assistance sites like TaxSlayer trustworthy?

The paid software is reliable, even for people with complicated taxes, but it takes me hours to even organize my taxes, and I often miss deductions related to real estate expenses. I pay a pro, but if I didn’t have real estate, I would file myself.

Hi Brianna! Thanks for writing! In my opinion, people who have simple financial lives are well able to do their own taxes on one of the many trustworthy and reputable online tax sites out there. TaxSlayer is a good one and there are lots more that are free if your AGI (adjusted gross income, or simply put, how much money you make in a year) is below a certain amount (about $60K for most programs) Other good free online tax prep sites are H&RBlock, Freetaxusa, and Tax Act. This IRS website lists many https://www.irs.gov/uac/Free-File:-Do-Your-Federal-Taxes-for-Free. You can learn a lot about finances by doing your own taxes! This article I wrote has more info: http://www.csmonitor.com/Business/Saving-Money/2016/0215/Taxes-Doing-it-yourself-is-easier-than-you-think.

If you own property, buy/sell stocks, have a business or have other more complicated tax issues, you probably want to hire someone to do taxes for you. But most of us have pretty simple returns, and by doing your taxes yourself, you can save money. Best wishes to you!
