If I am taking a gap year before medical school, do I have to start paying off my student loans?

Yes. Once you graduate, depending on the type of student loans you have, you might have a grace period of a few months where you don’t have to pay but eventually you will have to and then when you start medical school the payments would stop because you’ll be a student again. If you think you might have trouble paying your student loan bills, don’t be afraid to call your lender and ask about your options. It’s far better to work with them on a payment that fits into your budget than to ignore the bills altogether.
