I have the option of taking a paid job or an unpaid internship for the summer – the paid job makes more sense financially for the short term, while the internship is more of an investment in future employment. Wondering if anyone has any advice, thoughts, or experience with a similar situation?

If you’re thinking about the unpaid internship, try as much as you can to really check the chances that it will help you in the long run. Unpaid internships are not a guarantee to a future job. You might want to check your network to see if you know anyone who has worked for whatever company/group you are interested in before, to see if you think it will be a worthwhile experience/if they hire former interns. You can also check in to ask if unpaid internships are something to be expected in your field, or something to avoid. If you can afford the lack of pay, and you really feel that working there will be more helpful to you in the long term than working somewhere where you get paid, then go for it, just make sure that your choice is an informed one! Also, if you are a student, try to see if your school provides funding for students working unpaid internships!

If you have enough money to support yourself while doing an unpaid internship it may be worth it. I have done several unpaid internships allowing my resume to be more extensive and because of this resume I now have a well paid job with benefits lined up for next year.

Do you have enough money to work an unpaid internship? If so, it may be worth it. But if you need money more, a paid option can still be a good experience. Either way, work to get the most out of each, whatever you choose!
