Lily, when you hand a cashier a card, they will ask you "debit' or "credit?" It is usually not obvious to them which type of card you are handing them. Even with a debit card, you can (and should) say "credit" (unless you want cash back.) This does NOT turn your debit card into a credit card. What is does do is give the transaction the same legal standing as an electronic check, which gives you more protection if something goes wrong with the transaction. The transaction goes through the VISA or MC network to your bank. Remember that even if you say "credit" when using your debit card, the funds will still be taken from your account that day.
